SMBQ Becomes a Non-profit Corporation - Receives 501(c) (3) Status
Members of the Smoky Mountain Brass Quintet (SMBQ) are pleased to announce their recent designation as a non-profit corporation. This status will assist the quintet as they seek additional funds for the expansion of primary goals: to promote understanding and enjoyment of music, particularly among youth of Western North Carolina; and to expand appreciation for the musical heritage of the Southern Appalachian region.
The highly successful “Instrument Petting Zoo” sponsored by the SMBQ at the Fine and Performing Arts Center at Western Carolina University (WCU) introduced regional students to the joys of music. The event triggered numerous requests from regional schools to expand the program throughout Western North Carolina. As funds become available, the Quintet would like to do just that as well as to explore other creative avenues for encouraging musical expression among students living in Western North Carolina.
The anticipated concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 8, 2007 will capitalize on previous concerts in St. Petersburg, Russia and the British Isles, as the Quintet performs music featuring Southern Appalachian themes. The Quintet seeks continued opportunities to serve as musical ambassadors for WCU and the region.
As the SMBQ expands on past efforts, they also look to the future. The Quintet is exploring ways to perform for community events supporting worthwhile initiatives. As funds become available through the non-profit status, members hope to be able to do this free of charge.
Members of the Quintet wish to thank Arthur Ellick of the Elgar Group for his assistance in obtaining non-profit status and for continuing to search for funding as they expand their goals. They also wish to thank colleagues, administration, and students at WCU for continued support and interest. Finally, Brad, David, Michael, Dan, and Travis wish to thank enthusiastic audience members who attend concerts and provide continued support.
